Restaurant Review: Mallow Borough Market, A Place of Culinary Joy, or A Place To Feel ‘Mællow’ Inside?

Tucked snugly in the heart of Borough Market, Mallow has become a sensation among plant-based enthusiasts. Now, before you cast judgment, let me share the inside scoop. My veggie-loving comrades have hailed this joint as the holy grail of meatless dining, boasting it as the ultimate ‘no-meat, no-problem’ experience. While I did have carnivorous cravings, my concerns extended beyond the absence of meat. Allow me to elaborate.

The minimalist décor, while allowing focus on the food, could certainly use a bit of auditory spice – a little background music, perhaps?

Described as a ‘vegan culinary haven’, Mallow promises an unparalleled dining adventure. Well, it didn't quite whisk me off to Neverland. But stepping into Mallow, you're met with an inviting, almost snug atmosphere. Upstairs in the dining room, when that door closes, it feels more like a lock-in with fellow plant enthusiasts. The minimalist décor, while allowing focus on the food, could certainly use a bit of auditory spice – a little background music, perhaps?

Mallow's menu reads like an ode to vegan creativity. Each dish is a carefully orchestrated symphony of natural flavours and textures, but for me, the taste sensations fell a tad flat. Not due to a lack of protein, mind you, but rather a lack of pizzazz.

Now, about the staff – donning friendly smiles, they seemed to teeter on the brink of zen mastery… or perhaps they were experimenting with some secret mushroom recipe.

This wasn't an issue I encountered at Mildred's, their sister joint. While it's clear the chefs are wizards in plant-based wizardry, translating that more closely from paper to palate would elevate the experience from good to grand.

Now, about the staff – donning friendly smiles, they seemed to teeter on the brink of zen mastery… or perhaps they were experimenting with some secret mushroom recipe. Sometimes, a tad too much chill can create a discordant note in the dining symphony. After all, no one wants to leave feeling ‘mællow’ after a meal, right?

On the eco-friendly front, Mallow scores big points. Locally sourced, organic ingredients are stars of the show, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to sustainability.

In a nutshell, Mallow shines bright in the veggie dining galaxy. While I'm still a sceptic, I'm keeping an open mind. Whether you're a seasoned veg-head or just dabbling in the meatless world, Mallow offers a quirky detour from the Borough Market frenzy. With its creative cuisine, snug ambiance, and eco-friendly ethos, this spot is a must-visit for all foodies, plant-powered or not!
